Group Training Sessions vs. Classes

The difference is so nuanced. Why does it matter?

Why We Call Them Sessions, Not Classes

When we think of group fitness, our go-to word is ‘classes’ no matter what type of workout it is. It could be Yoga, Zumba, or strength training, and if it’s done in a group, it’s called a class. However, I try so hard for my coaches and service staff to call them sessions. It seems like a subtle difference, so why do I think that’s a big deal?

Perceived Value Matters

For starters, when you think of a class, you think of something that is free. When something is free, the perceived value is lower than something that isn’t free. I don’t want the perceived value of our training sessions to be low. They’re also definitely not free, so it just seems counterintuitive to use the word ‘classes’ even though we are talking about working out in a group.

When we describe our group training sessions, we tell new clients that it feels like one-on-one personal training just delivered to a small group. We want to maintain that distinction so that we uphold the value and high-service component in what we offer.

Key Differences Between Classes & Sessions

1. Instruction & Guidance

A typical group fitness class has an instructor standing in front, leading the students to follow along. If they go right, you go right. If they squat, you squat. It’s up to you to keep up!

A training session is different. As a participant, your job isn’t to figure things out alone—that’s the coach’s job. At W3Body, our coaches:

  • Understand the movements.
  • Explain exercises in a way that works for you.
  • Modify exercises based on your needs.
  • Check in with you to ensure progress.

2. Structured Progression vs. Random Workouts

Group fitness is often random—movements are thrown together without long-term planning. Even Zumba classes follow a random playlist each time. It gets you moving, but does it align with your fitness goals?

In contrast, our semi-private personal training sessions follow a structured plan that:

  • Is consistent from week to week.
  • Is the same from coach to coach.
  • Is proven to show improvement over time.

We track your strength training progress and have the tools to show measurable improvements.
